OK, so here goes my 1st Tarot reading for this project. I am using the Druid Craft Tarot cards. Although I bought Meabh some Wizard of Oz one’s which are way cool and I’d secretly like to use those. Anyway, I’m going to use the Celtic cross spread as it’s familiar and easy. I know several other spreads but they’re for different purposes. I might use them as things progress, lets see. So, here goes. Listed below is my question. Following this are the positions in the reading in terms of their significance and the cards that fell in these houses. Below this I’ll provide an explanation of what I think the Cards mean:
My Question was ‘How will this project develop?’
1. What Covers – King of Wands
2. What Crosses – Seven of Pentacles
3. What Crowns – Strength
4. What is Beneath – five of swords
5. What is Behind – The Tower
6. What is before – Crenunnos (the devil)
7.What is feared – Prince of swords
8. what other feel – The star
9. What is wished – Rebirth
10. What may come – Four of wands
My interpretation
What covers: The king of wands. This is the card that normally represents me in a tarot spread. He represents a fiery man who is lively, amusing, freedom loving, ambitious and a good organiser. It is natural that this card falls here as the card in this position represents the situation in which the object of the question find his/her self in. As this project is a practical means of asking an ontological question about how I relate to my direct environment, then it seems fitting that the card that normally represents me would fall in this position.
What Crosses: Seven of Pentacles. Seven is the number of magic, spirituality and all general kinds of questing and research. The Seven of Pentacles, taken on it’s own, means that the projects I have been working on are now bearing fruit and I can being to take pleasure in them as they grow. In this position the card can represent either obstacles ‘crossing my path’ or else the outward state of affairs I find myself in. Given this card and the current progress with all my work, I read this card as denoting my outward situation. Again, it makes sense it’s here: one of the reasons I began this project was for my own enjoyment. I wanted to do something that was purely for me and had nothing to do with any business aspect of my work as an artist.
What Crowns: Strength. The card in this position represents the ideal goal or principle guiding my activities. I think this one’s pretty obvious. The key word associated with the Figure of Strength in the Major Arcana are: Unconditional Love, Courage, Faith, Power with Awareness, ‘Wild’ Wisdom and compassion. That’s me about summed up (on a good day).
What is Beneath: The card in this position represents the basis of the situation or state one finds oneself in. The five of Swords isn’t the best card to have here. All the five’s are quite bleak cards. At the root of the five of swords is a sense of conflict or sorrow caused by conflict. It can also be an indicator of slander in some form. After pausing to this about this for a while, I’ve decided that card isn’t so bad. One of my other reasons for beginning this project was a dissatisfaction with the more traditional forms of performance art that seem to dominate the concept of performativity in art. This is what I am in conflict with.
What is Behind: This card represents past situations, or else a situation that I am currently in the process of leaving. I’m glad the tower is in the past and not in the future. The tower can be read in a few ways. The first is that there has been a situation which I have inhabited for too long and this old way of being must be destroyed for future growth. Other waysw of looking at it include a moment of revelation, sudden release of tension, liberation and awakening. These are postive spins on the first statement though. Perhaps in this position it represents the destruction and recreation of my world view through this new project. That’s a bit full on.
What is before: This card represents what lies before me in the immediate future. I got the devil. All seems a bit dark now. Never mind, the devil does not represent satan. Key words associated with this card are: Potential for liberation, mastery of life force, awakening of responsibility, Materialism, obsession. SO, the connotation here is that my project will awaken these things in me. Although I hope it doesn’t make me obsessive. That would suck.
What is feared: the card in this position represents the things I fear in the situation. I have always had a funny relationship to fear. I’d be one of those people who believe fear is the friend of exceptional people: it’s good to make it your ally. The Prince of swords in this position is quite hard to read. If it represents a person then it represents someone either younger than me, or less advanced than me in terms of career, who is argumentative and will attempt to pick holes in what I’m doing. If it doesn’t represent such a person (and there are plenty of people like that around) then it denotes a radical change in my lifestyle and routine. Given the nature of what I’m doing this card could represent either. But these are not things that I am scared of, although argumentative types always annoy me.
What others feel: This card represents what other feel so it might shed some light on what others think about what I’m doing. The Star is a very good card to have here. It suggests that those closest to me feel positive and supportive of my activities. This might change as things progress, although I hope not.
What is Wished for: This position represents the outcome I desire from what I am doing. The card here is rebirth (or Judgment in other tarot decks), so it suggests that I am seeking some kind of spiritual rebirth Or else that I will undergo some kind of transformation. I’m not sure how true this is. I guess it is true in the sense that I want to have a process that it entirely for me and nothing else to do with work, so there is a kind of creative rebirth here, which is a kind of spiritual rebirth. This card can also mean a call to change some aspect of your being.
What may come: The card in this position represents influences or events that night come about. It is bad to think of it as a prediction of the future, since nothing is set in stone. The four of wans is in this position and the key works associated with this card are: celebration, harvest, harth and home. this card in this position suggests that my experience of this project will by enriching, rewarding and satisfying.
I think that’s a pretty damn positive reading. Lets see how it all goes and have a look at this at the end of thing.
